Meet the Founders: Passionate About Neurodiversity and Online Learning at The Haven

The Haven isn’t just a school; it’s the embodiment of a vision brought to life by a team deeply passionate about neurodiversity and the transformative potential of online learning. As a project of the Autistic Girls Network (AGN) charity, The Haven is rooted in years of experience advocating for and supporting neurodivergent individuals, particularly girls and non-binary young people. Opening some kind of Alternative Provision has been a long-term goal, and we see further ones in our future!

AGN, a charity dedicated to this community, has long recognised the need for educational environments that truly understand and celebrate neurodiversity. Through our work and our own lived experience, we’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by neurodivergent learners in traditional settings and the incredible potential that can be unlocked when education is tailored to their unique strengths and needs.

The founders of The Haven are not just educators; they are advocates, innovators, and champions for neurodivergent individuals. They bring a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the nuances of neurodiversity, combined with a forward-thinking approach to online education. AGN’s board are 100% lived experience and 9 out of 10 trustees are neurodivergent themselves. Between them they have experience of Headship, teaching, speech and language therapy, finance, SEND advocacy, Local Authority SEND consultancy, mental health professionals and more, as well as experiencing our Education, Health and Social Care Systems firsthand with neurodivergent children. We get it.

What Drives Our Passion?

  • A Commitment to Neuro-Affirmation: We are driven by a belief that neurodivergence is a strength, not a deficit. We are passionate about creating a learning environment where neurodivergent individuals feel valued, understood, and empowered to be their authentic selves.

  • A Desire to Transform Education: We envision a world where education is inclusive and adaptable, catering to the diverse learning styles and needs of all students. The Haven is our answer to the limitations of a conventional educational model which was actively harmful to some of our children.

  • A Belief in the Power of Online Learning: We recognise the unique benefits of online learning for neurodivergent individuals, including the ability to create sensory-friendly environments, offer flexible learning schedules, and reduce social anxieties.

  • A Dedication to Community Building: We are committed to fostering a strong sense of belonging and connection among learners, creating a supportive network where individuals can thrive. Neurodivergent young people are also used to building friendships online – this is often a regular part of their lives and these relationships are important.

  • A Vision for a Brighter Future: We are driven by a desire to equip neurodivergent learners with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in all aspects of life, empowering them to reach their full potential.

The Haven is more than just an online school; it’s a reflection of our unwavering dedication to creating a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape. Our passion, combined with the expertise of AGN, has resulted in a unique learning environment where neurodivergent learners can truly flourish.
