Creating a Haven for Wellbeing and Learning

At The Haven, our mission extends beyond providing exceptional online education for neurodivergent girls and non-binary young people aged 11-17. We are deeply committed to fostering a learning environment where wellbeing, good mental health, and emotional security are paramount. We understand that for neurodivergent learners, navigating the complexities of emotions and social interactions can be particularly nuanced, and our approach is intentionally designed to provide the support and tools needed to thrive emotionally as well as academically.

Born from the Autistic Girls Network (AGN), The Haven embodies years of advocacy and a profound understanding of the unique experiences of our community. We recognised the critical need for a learning space that not only caters to diverse cognitive styles but also prioritises emotional regulation, emotional literacy, and a strong sense of safety and belonging.

Our Holistic Approach: Wellbeing Woven into Learning

We believe that good mental health is foundational to successful learning. That’s why wellbeing is not an add-on at The Haven; it’s integral to our educational ethos and daily practice. We strive to create a calm, predictable, and understanding online environment that minimises potential stressors and maximises opportunities for emotional growth.

Key aspects of our commitment to wellbeing include:

  • Fostering Emotional Literacy: We explicitly teach and explore emotional literacy, helping our learners to identify, understand, and articulate their own emotions and those of others. Through dedicated resources, discussions, and mindful practices integrated into our curriculum, we aim to build a strong vocabulary and framework for understanding the inner emotional landscape.

  • Developing Emotional Regulation Skills: We provide learners with practical strategies and tools to support emotional regulation. This includes teaching coping mechanisms for managing anxiety, frustration, and overwhelm, tailored to individual sensory and processing needs. Our mentors play a key role in guiding students to develop healthy and effective self-regulation skills.

  • The Power of Co-Regulation by Teachers: Our teachers and mentors are trained in co-regulation techniques. We understand that sometimes, learners need external support to manage intense emotions. Our team is equipped to provide calm, empathetic responses and model effective regulation strategies, helping students to gradually develop their own internal capacity for emotional balance. This involves creating a predictable and safe environment, offering clear and consistent communication, and responding with empathy and understanding to emotional expressions.

  • Individualised Wellbeing Support: We recognise that each learner’s emotional needs are unique. Our mentoring programme allows for personalised discussions around wellbeing, providing a safe space to explore challenges and develop individualised coping strategies. We also work closely with families and external professionals, where appropriate, to ensure a holistic approach to mental health support.

  • Building a Supportive Community: A strong sense of belonging is crucial for emotional wellbeing. Our online community fosters connections with peers who share similar experiences, reducing feelings of isolation and promoting mutual understanding and support. This shared experience can be incredibly validating and contribute significantly to good mental health.

  • Mindfulness and Self-Care Practices: We integrate mindfulness and self-care activities into our learning routines, providing learners with tools to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and cultivate a positive sense of self.

  • A Focus on Strengths: By emphasising and celebrating the unique strengths of our neurodivergent learners, we build confidence and resilience, which are vital for good mental health.

At The Haven, we believe that by nurturing wellbeing, emotional regulation, and emotional literacy, and through the supportive presence of teachers skilled in co-regulation, we can create an online learning environment where neurodivergent young people not only achieve academic success but also develop the emotional resilience and self-awareness necessary to thrive in all aspects of their lives. We are more than just an online school; we are a haven for growth, understanding, and genuine care.
