Examinations
How exams work at The Haven
The Haven is an online, trauma-informed, neurodivergent-affirming provision. We don’t run our own exam hall. Instead, we support families to sit GCSEs (and selected other qualifications) as private candidates (at separate cost) at an approved exam centre. For 2025/26, we partner with Tutors & Exams (T&E), a leading private-candidate exam centre network.
Our aim is simple: make the exam journey clear, humane, and well-timed, so learners can focus on showing what they know.
What we offer
- Guidance & timelines from expression of interest to results day.
- Centre referrals to T&E (and other suitable centres if needed).
- Access arrangements (EAAs) coordination via our SENDCo, aligned to your child’s normal way of working.
- NEA/portfolio support where applicable, and clear communications if a subject involves Non-Examined Assessment.
- Wellbeing-first preparation: pacing plans, check-ins, and regulation-aware exam readiness.
(Aligned with The Haven Examinations Policy.)
Our exams partner: Tutors & Exams
Why T&E?
- National coverage and specialist experience with private candidates.
- Clear internal timelines for entries, NEA submissions, and Access Arrangements (earlier than awarding bodies to allow quality assurance and logistics).
- Secure candidate portal, joining instructions, result issuing, and post-results services.
Key things to know:
- T&E’s internal deadlines are final (they precede awarding-body deadlines to keep things smooth and compliant).
- Home Invigilation and Modified Papers are capacity-limited – early applications matter.
- A separate NEA SLA is required for subjects with coursework/NEA.
The Haven x T&E: who does what?
The Haven
- Help you choose subjects/boards and map key dates.
- Coordinate EAAs evidence with families and specialists so it reflects a normal way of working.
- Provide learning evidence where relevant (e.g., portfolio summaries).
- Keep you informed, calm, and prepared.
Tutors & Exams
- Process entries once paid and within awarding-body windows.
- Manage Access Arrangements applications upon receiving complete evidence by their internal deadlines.
- Issue the candidate portal login, joining instructions, timetables, and results.
- Offer post-results services in line with awarding bodies.
Key milestones (typical)
Exact dates are published each year by T&E; we will notify families as they open.
Autumn term (Sept–Dec):
- Confirm subjects and preferred centre.
- Begin/complete EAA assessments and gather evidence.
- For Summer exams, Home Invigilation and Modified Paper requests may have December/early-January internal deadlines at T&E. Plan early.
Spring term (Jan–Apr):
- Finalise entries and fees.
- Submit any remaining EAA documents before the last internal cut-offs.
- If your subject has NEA, expect March/April internal submission deadlines at T&E; late or incomplete work is not accepted.
Summer term (May–Jun):
- Sit exams with agreed arrangements in place.
- We provide wellbeing check-ins and practical reminders.
Results & beyond (Aug):
- Results issued via T&E. We’ll help you interpret outcomes, consider appeals (if appropriate), and plan next steps.
Note on “Have we missed a deadline?”
T&E lists series-specific internal dates (Autumn/January/Summer). If you’re aiming for Summer 2026, the important internal cut-offs typically start from December 2025 into January 2026 (for certain EAAs) and March/April 2026 (for NEA), not last summer. We’ll keep you on track with the current year’s dates.
Access Arrangements (EAAs)
We support applications for:
- Extra time, rest breaks, reader/scribe, modified papers (e.g., large print/colour), and other reasonable adjustments.
- EAAs must be evidence-based and reflect a normal way of working.
T&E can only apply arrangements when complete evidence reaches them by their internal deadlines; late/incomplete submissions may be refused by awarding bodies.
Non Exam Assessment (coursework) subjects
If your child sits a subject with NEA, we’ll explain the specification requirements and timelines. T&E requires an NEA-specific SLA and enforces strict internal submission deadlines ahead of awarding-body cut-offs; late or non-compliant submissions are rejected. We’ll help you plan early to avoid stress.
Fees & payments
Exam and service fees are paid directly to T&E; entries are submitted only once full payment is received.
T&E invoices are typically due within 14 days; please plan ahead to prevent delays to entries.
Data, consent & safeguarding
- We follow UK GDPR and only share information with T&E where consent is given and necessary for exam delivery.
- T&E will not share a candidate’s results with The Haven unless the candidate has provided written consent.
- Families of candidates under 18 will be signposted to T&E’s Safeguarding Policy.
Cancellations & changes
Tell us and T&E promptly if your details change or you need to withdraw. Awarding-body rules and T&E policies determine any fees or eligibility for refunds. Accuracy at entry stage prevents costly amendments.
Wellbeing matters
Exams can be intense—especially for neurodivergent learners. We build emotional regulation and pacing into learning, and offer pre-exam check-ins and 1:1 support where needed. Success is broader than grades; we celebrate effort, growth, and next steps.
