How We Teach at The Haven

The Haven is not just an online school, it’s a sanctuary for learning differently.

We exist for neurodivergent learners who need something more human, more flexible, and more attuned to how they really learn. Everything we do is trauma-informed, strengths-based, and future-facing.

Our Approach to Learning

Trauma-Informed & Safe by Design

We know that learning only happens when students feel safe, seen and supported. Our teachers are trained in trauma-informed practice and co-regulation. We create calm, connected virtual classrooms that help learners reset, rebuild trust, and re-engage on their own terms.

Learning That Sticks

We design each lesson using the latest insights from cognitive science, including Cognitive Load Theory. This means we reduce overwhelm and build memory, using strategies like:

Short, structured 40-minute lessons

Clear explanations and visual supports

Worked examples and step-by-step modelling

Retrieval practice and guided repetition

21st Century Skills for a Changing World

We’re not just preparing students for exams — we’re preparing them for life. Our curriculum nurtures:

Collaboration & communication

Self-regulation & self-advocacy

Creativity & problem-solving

Digital literacy & responsible tech use

Life Skills for young adults including money management

Curriculum

Core Curriculum

We teach English, Maths and STEAM in small groups, delivered in 6-week blocks, six blocks a year. All sessions are live, interactive, and designed to be accessible to learners with ADHD, autism, sensory differences and other neurodivergent profiles.

Project-Based Learning

Wherever possible, we blend subjects into real-world projects that matter to students helping them connect the dots between school and life.

Back to Balance

Our gentle 12-week reintroduction to learning, ideal for students transitioning from being unable to go to school, anxiety or burnout.

How We Assess Progress

At The Haven, assessment is about growth, not pressure.

  • We begin with a thoughtful baseline that explores each learner’s strengths, needs and goals.
  • Learners help set their own targets, supported by our mentors and SENCO.
  • Progress is measured through a mix of formative assessment (daily reflection, discussion, low-stakes quizzes) and summative assessment (projects, skill demonstrations, and tailored tasks).

We also track soft skills like resilience, communication and engagement, through a 4-point Attitude to Learning scale. This gives a more human view of progress, especially for students who’ve struggled in traditional settings.

Parents receive termly learning narratives, combining feedback from teachers, reflections from students, and next-step goals.

Learners from outside the UK

We welcome learners from outside the UK. To see if The Haven would fit in with your neurodivergent learners outside the UK please take a look at our Overseas Students Policy.
