The Haven’s Back to Balance

12-Week Framework for Re-engagement

This framework outlines a 12-week programme, with 2 x 40 minute group sessions per week, designed to gently reintroduce disengaged neurodivergent learners back to learning in a safe and supportive online space. The focus is on building confidence, reducing anxiety, and fostering a positive relationship with learning at their own pace.

Overarching Principles

  • Safety and Trust: Creating a predictable, low-pressure environment where learners feel safe to be themselves.

  • Individualised Approach: Recognising the unique needs and interests of each learner.

  • Small Steps and Gradual Increase: Avoiding overwhelm by introducing learning activities in manageable increments.

  • Sensory Considerations: Minimising sensory triggers and providing options for self-regulation.

  • Choice and Agency: Empowering learners by offering choices and involving them in the process.

  • Positive Reinforcement: Focusing on strengths and celebrating small successes.

  • Collaboration: Working closely with learners, parents/carers, with reports from involved professionals if appropriate.

Throughout the Programme

  • Consistent Mentor Support: Regular check-ins and communication with the designated mentor.

  • Parent/Carer Involvement: Regular updates and opportunities for collaboration.

  • Flexibility and Adaptability: Willingness to adjust the programme based on the individual learner’s needs and progress.

  • Focus on Well-being: Prioritising the learner’s emotional and mental well-being throughout the process.

  • Positive Language and Framing: Emphasising strengths and progress over perceived deficits.

This framework provides a flexible structure that can be adapted to the unique needs of each neurodivergent learner, including those on an EOTAS package. The key is to be patient, responsive, and create a truly safe and supportive space for them to rediscover their love of learning.
