Preparing for Adulthood

Preparing for adulthood is a significant transition for all young people, and it can present unique complexities for those who are neurodivergent. In the UK, there’s an increasing focus on providing tailored support to ensure individuals can navigate this phase successfully, however it is often not well supported or even included in EHCPs (though it should be by law). At The Haven, we believe it’s really important to equip our young people with these skills for a happier transition to independence, and we can help Local Authorities with this aspect of their duties.

Key Areas of Focus:

Education and Training

This includes ensuring access to appropriate further education, vocational training, and apprenticeships that align with individual strengths and needs.

Emphasis is placed on reasonable adjustments within educational settings to facilitate successful learning (we already have many built-in as standard at The Haven).

Employment

Support in developing employability skills, such as CV writing, interview techniques, and workplace communication.

Promoting awareness among employers about neurodiversity and the benefits of employing neurodivergent individuals.

Access to supported employment schemes and resources that provide ongoing workplace support.

Independent Living

Developing essential life skills, including budgeting, cooking, and managing household tasks.

Exploring housing options and support services that promote independent living.

Health and Wellbeing

Ensuring access to appropriate mental health support and services.

Promoting self-advocacy skills to enable individuals to effectively communicate their health needs.

Social Inclusion

Facilitating opportunities for social interaction and community participation.

Supporting the development of healthy relationships and social skills.
