Four Pillars of Empowerment: What Matters Most for Neurodivergent Learners at The Haven
Building on our exploration of the benefits of online learning, we at The Haven believe that creating a truly thriving educational experience for neurodivergent learners hinges on more than just delivery methods. It’s about fostering an environment where fundamental needs are met and celebrated. Through Autistic Girls Network charity and the design of The Haven, we’ve identified four crucial pillars that underpin our approach: autonomy, a feeling of belonging, a feeling that you can do it (self-efficacy), and understanding.
While you might have already considered the first three, we believe the fourth, understanding, is the bedrock upon which the others are built.
- Understanding: The Foundation of Empowerment
Before autonomy can be truly embraced, belonging fostered, or self-efficacy ignited, there needs to be a deep sense of understanding. This encompasses:
- Understanding of Neurodiversity: Learners need to understand their own neurodivergence, their strengths, their challenges, and how they experience the world differently. This self-awareness is crucial for self-advocacy and navigating life effectively. At The Haven, our “Neurodiversity University” strand directly addresses this through topics like “My Neurodivergent Identity,” “The Sensory Me,” and “Understanding Feelings and Emotions.”
- Understanding from Educators and Peers: A learning environment where educators and peers genuinely understand and validate neurodivergent experiences is paramount. This fosters trust, reduces the need for masking, and creates a safe space for authentic expression. Our neuro-affirming pedagogy and mentoring programmes are designed to cultivate this understanding.
- Understanding Individual Needs: Recognising the breadth of neurodiversity, understanding individual sensory sensitivities, communication styles, and learning preferences is essential for providing tailored support. Our flexible curriculum and personalised learning pathways are built on this principle.
- Autonomy: Taking Control of the Learning Journey
Once a foundation of understanding is in place, autonomy becomes a powerful driver of engagement and success. Neurodivergent learners often thrive when they have a sense of control over their learning:
- Choice in Learning Activities: Offering options in how they approach tasks and demonstrate their understanding can increase motivation and cater to individual interests. Our passion-led Friday strands offer complete co-production too, and our learners are VERY involved in what happens and what future topics/subjects will be on offer.
- Pacing and Time Management: The flexibility of online learning at The Haven allows students to work at their own pace, managing their time in a way that suits their energy levels and processing needs.
- Self-Advocacy Skills: Empowering learners to understand their needs and advocate for themselves is crucial for long-term success. Our “Self Advocacy and Feeling Empowered” resources within Neurodiversity University directly address this.
- A Feeling of Belonging: Finding Your People
The sense of belonging is vital for emotional wellbeing and academic engagement. For neurodivergent individuals who may have experienced isolation or misunderstanding in the past, finding a supportive community is transformative:
- Connecting with Like-Minded Peers: The Haven’s online environment facilitates connections with other neurodivergent girls and non-binary young people who share similar experiences.
- Mentorship and Role Models: Our neurodivergent mentors provide relatable support and guidance, fostering a sense of understanding and shared identity.
- Inclusive Community Spaces: We actively cultivate online spaces where learners feel safe to be themselves, share their experiences, and build meaningful relationships.
- A Feeling That You Can Do It (Self-Efficacy): Building Confidence and Belief
Finally, fostering a strong sense of self-efficacy – the belief in one’s ability to succeed – is crucial for neurodivergent learners who may have faced past challenges or internalised negative messages:
- Celebrating Strengths and Achievements: Our strength-based approach focuses on highlighting talents and celebrating successes, building confidence and motivation.
- Providing Scaffolding and Support: We offer appropriate support and guidance to help learners overcome challenges and experience success, gradually building their independence.
- Promoting a Growth Mindset: We encourage learners to view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, fostering self-confidence and strength and a belief in their potential.
At The Haven, these four pillars – understanding, autonomy, belonging, and self-efficacy – are not just ideals; they are the guiding principles that shape our online learning environment. We believe that by nurturing these fundamental needs, we can empower neurodivergent learners to thrive, embrace their unique brilliance, and build a confident and fulfilling future.
